Grading Postcards
We have come across a number of grading
standard for old or antique postcards. There are generally accepted standards
in the postcard collecting hobby industry.
Most people accept that everyone will have their own opinion as to what the
descriptions should mean. Please feel free to comment on the descriptions we
have condensed from both dealers and collectors descriptions of postcards.
Poor / P - Seriously damaged or incomplete, image affected. A gap filler at
best.
Fair / F - Just about in a collectable state bearing any of the following:
Significant edge or corner damage; obvious damp damage; creasing; staining, small
tears or other problem.
Good / G - Collectable but with noticeable defects, handling and wear apparent,
slight creasing and minor postal damage not detrimental to image acceptable in
this category.
Very Good / VG - Collectable with some minor defects: album marks; signs of
age and handling, nothing that would detract from a visually pleasing card.
Excellent / Ex - No obvious flaws. Sharp corners, clean and if postally used,
writing of a quality that does not affect the over all appearance.
Mint / M - As new, crisp, unposted, pristine condition. Not normally available
in a vintage card unless in original packet.
